Mahindra & Mahindra being India’s master in SUV segment has been enthralling the slow India auto market in the recent times. Lately, Mahindra’s Verito Compact Sedan has been one of the most awaited cars. The Verito CS has been regularly spotted testing on the roads and that is just strengthening the fact that that Mahindra is meticulously testing and fine tuning the new car before introducing it into the market. From the confusing spy shots of the car, the speculations of the Verito CS have been oscillating between a hatchback and a notchback. However, according to recent pictures, the compact sedan is confirmed the speculations to be a notchback.
The Verito’s design would be a fresh breath of air, as it has a very different side styling. The vehicle is expected to come with its tail-lamps positioned in the upper half of the 5th door and a 10 spoke alloy wheels would décor the top end variant. Powering the car would be the tried and tested 1.5-liter diesel engine that powers the full size sedan variant. The Mahindra Verito CS is expected to be revealed around the end of March 2013. With an under 4 meter length the Verito CS is expected to have a stumpy boot. This compact sedan will be powered by the same 1.5 Liter K9K turbo diesel engine that drives the full sized Verito sedan. Usually a slashed down compact sedans look pretty hideous. Thus, the Verito was expected look like a hatchback rather than a compact sedan.
If Mahindra prices the Verito notchback at a level that can challenge the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Ford Figo, then it can be expected to sell pretty well. As far as cost is concerned building a hatchback version of the Verito shouldn’t give Mahindra too much trouble, given its mastery in frugal engineering. For example, Mahindra produced the successful Quanto from by cutting down the full size Xyllo by invested just about INR 150 crores to develop the compact SUV.
As the 1.5 Liter Renault K9K turbo diesel engine is already there to be used on Verito CS, the development costs for it should be even lesser than the Quanto. Nevertheless, while a Verito hatchback can appeal to a section of car buyers who value practicality and more spacious cars over looks, a sedan still holds its class above the hatchback when it comes to the elite in India. Thus, Mahindra is launching a compact sedan version of the Verito rather than just another hatchback.
The compact sedans are so preferred by the consumers in India, that a lot of car manufacturers are more than willing to join the compact sedan band wagon. As for the New Year 2013, two compact sedans are already in the pipeline for launch, namely the Mahindra Verito CS and the Honda Brio Amaze. While, the Mahindra Verito CS is to be tagged close to the Tata Indigo eCS, the Brio Amaze is expected to have a higher price range. The Brio Amaze will have a stern rival in the form of the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire.
